A training skills matrix can be used for several purposes other than to track and monitor employee progress within levels.

A matrix is a good visual tool for employees to have full awareness of what their role entails, and the relevant skills competencies required, what their progress is towards achieving training goals, as well as training needs. This also will allow supervisors to recognize their team’s skill sets and embrace cross functional work and/or training as well as increase flexibility by allowing people to master a broad range of skills. Through this visual management tool, employees are able to gain a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, as well as see and understand the value they bring to the organization. When this tool is used company-wide, it creates the ability to search for desired skills and talents across the organization, see organizational strengths and weaknesses, allow for future resource planning, and creates consistency among management.
